I was in this parish one day listening to a Christmas sermon when the priest mentioned the fact that Christ's birth was first revealed to shepherds. This story is familiar to all Christians, but he embellished his sermon by saying it was common knowledge that shepherds had a "Very colorful nightlife," and were thus amongst the most despised of society. If you get what the priest is alluding to you understand why they were despised. The fact this priest used such an example in his sermon showed me he really understands the message of Jesus the man. As the educated are aware, a simple message of love and acceptance all too often convoluted to serve a purpose. In modern America a message often convoluted by those aspiring to politcal power and/or self enrichment.
